Hon. Regina Akume has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections in Benue State.

Akume secured victory during the APC House of Representatives primary election conducted in Benue State, earning the party’s ticket for a second term bid in the National Assembly. The result was announced by the Chairman of the National Assembly Primary Election Committee in the state, Sabiu Mahuta, at the APC secretariat in Makurdi.

The serving lawmaker currently represents Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency in the 10th House of Representatives under the APC platform. Reports from the primaries indicated that her opponent stepped down from the race before the final exercise, paving the way for her emergence as the party’s flag bearer.

Born in 1955, Regina Mbavekumtor Akume is a politician and former First Lady of Benue State during the administration of former governor and current Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume. She officially joined elective politics in 2023 when she contested and won the House of Representatives seat for Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency.

At the National Assembly, she currently chairs the House Committee on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). She has also served on ad-hoc committees and has been associated with constituency projects focused on rural development, healthcare access, youth empowerment and support programmes for women in her constituency.

Within Gboko and Tarka local government areas, Regina Akume has maintained political visibility through empowerment programmes, community outreach and constituency engagements since assuming office in 2023.

Her victory in the APC primaries comes amid ongoing political contests and realignments within the ruling party in Benue State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
