Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa Makes History as First Female VC, Michael Okpara University 

Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa has been named the seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), making history as the first woman to lead the institution since its inception.

The decision was announced after the university’s 95th Governing Council meeting by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, . Council members disclosed that the appointment followed a thorough review of recommendations presented by the Selection Panel constituted to oversee the process.

Professor Akanwa, who currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), will officially assume office on March 1, 2026. She will take over from the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, , whose tenure ends in February.

A specialist in Educational Measurement and Evaluation, Professor Akanwa began her academic journey at MOUAU in 2010 when she joined the university as an Associate Professor from . Her academic progression saw her rise to the rank of full Professor in 2014, reflecting her sustained contributions to research, scholarship, and institutional growth.

Her appointment is being hailed as a landmark moment for gender representation in university leadership, particularly within Nigeria’s agricultural higher education space. With her background in research management and academic development, stakeholders express confidence that she will consolidate the university’s drive for innovation, research excellence, and community impact.
