Oluremi Tinubu advocates collective responsibility for clean energy transition

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on citizens to see environmental protection not as a government obligation alone, but as a shared civic duty tied to the country’s long-term survival and wellbeing.

In a statement released in Abuja to mark the 2026 International Day of Clean Energy, Tinubu framed the global observance as a moment for national introspection on Nigeria’s relationship with its environment and energy choices. The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Clean Energy for People and Planet.”

According to her, environmental sustainability must move beyond rhetoric to everyday practice, anchored on the adoption of renewable energy sources and sustainable technologies that protect both human health and natural ecosystems.

She stressed that clean energy is no longer a luxury but a necessity for sustainable development, public health, and environmental preservation, urging Nigerians to align personal, community and institutional actions with these goals.

The First Lady further described the transition to clean energy as a collective journey that requires cooperation across sectors, communities and generations to secure a healthier planet for present and future Nigerians.

The International Day of Clean Energy, observed annually on January 26, was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/77/327 to promote awareness and accelerate a just, inclusive global transition to sustainable energy systems for the benefit of humanity and the environment.
