The Kogi State Police Command has made history with the appointment of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Saliu Oyiza as its first female Police Public Relations Officer.

ASP Oyiza replaces William Aya, who served as the command’s spokesperson for a decade. The official handover took place on Monday at the police command headquarters in Lokoja.

Speaking during the ceremony, Aya expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Nasiru Kankarofi, for the confidence reposed in him throughout his years of service. He called on officers, stakeholders, and members of the public to give maximum support to his successor.

According to him, the role of police spokesperson is crucial in shaping public perception of the force, adding that he is confident ASP Oyiza will strengthen police-community relations and sustain professionalism in information management.

“I have served as the spokesperson since 2015, and it is time to hand over. I believe the new spokesperson will further enhance the image of the Nigeria Police Force and maintain a healthy relationship with the public,” Aya said.

He also appreciated journalists in the state, particularly members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), for their cooperation over the years and appealed to them to extend the same support to the new spokesperson.

In her response, ASP Oyiza thanked her predecessor for his dedication and mentorship, pledging to build on the foundation he laid while promoting transparency and positive engagement between the police and residents of the state.

Meanwhile, William Aya was honoured with an Award of Excellence by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Kogi State chapter, in recognition of his service and contribution to public communication.

The appointment of ASP Oyiza marks a significant milestone for gender inclusion within the Kogi State Police Command.
