Ebonyi State Govt’ Unveils First Functional Shelter for GBV Survivors

The Ebonyi State government has inaugurated its first fully operational shelter dedicated to supporting survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Located within Unity Square in Abakaliki, the shelter aims to provide comprehensive rehabilitation, legal, and medical assistance to victims across all 13 local government areas in the state.

MaryAnn Ekwutosia Nkwegu, the Special Assistant to the Governor on GBV, announced the establishment during a visit to the center, accompanied by the GBV Taskforce team for a baseline assessment.

She commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for his commitment to human rights, noting that the shelter’s creation is a significant step toward reducing the incidence of deaths and injuries associated with GBV.

“Ebonyi is the first state in Nigeria to establish a functional GBV shelter,” Nkwegu stated. “This initiative underscores our dedication to supporting all victims, including men who may be experiencing gender-based violence. We encourage them to seek help and access the services available at this center.”

Barr. Faithvin Nwanchor, the State Coordinator of the GBV Taskforce and Director of the Sexual Assault and GBV Response Department in the Ministry of Justice, highlighted the team’s ongoing advocacy efforts throughout the state. She emphasized the importance of men utilizing the shelter’s services, asserting that violence affects all genders and that no one should suffer in silence.

Earlier , Mrs. Goodness Mgbaja, the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State GBV Taskforce, and Mr. Nweke Emmanuel of the Women and Children Department, Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, both urged men to come forward and report any form of abuse. They emphasized that seeking assistance is crucial for personal well-being and for fostering healthier relationships within families and communities.

The establishment of this shelter is part of a broader initiative by the Ebonyi State government to combat GBV and support survivors. Earlier efforts have included empowering over 250 women, including widows and GBV survivors, with resources to start poultry businesses, thereby enhancing their livelihoods and raising awareness about GBV practices across the state.

Governor Nwifuru’s administration continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens, ensuring that survivors of gender-based violence receive the necessary support and resources to rebuild their lives.
